An image of blogger vs wix comparison

One of the common questions asked by aspiring bloggers is how to create a free website/blog? and what is the best blogging platform?

With an increase in the number of blogs there's bound to be an increase in the number of website builders. This makes it hard for people to choose which platform is best for them.

Blogger or Wix, which website builder is Best for Blogging in 2022?

Blogger and Wix are unique in their own ways so the choice as to which platform is best depends on you. To be honest I don't think this is a fair comparison given the fact that wix also has paid plans giving it an upper hand in this comparison. So to be fair I'll be comparing both platforms based on wix's free plan.

In this article we'll be highlighting the major differences between wix and blogger in order to help you make an informed decision as to which blogging platform is best.

If you found this blog post through organic search then I reckon you're already familiar with both platforms. But for those who are not, let's give a quick overview.

Wix - An Overview.

Wix is one of the most popular all-inclusive website building solutions in the market.

It operates a bit similar to Blogger since hosting and domain management are part of the deal.

You will still have to host your website on its server and you can access and manage it through your Wix admin panel.

Wix is yet another amazing blogging platform for creating stunning websites. With plenty of easy drag and drop templates and free site hosting, Wix is one of the best free blog sites to start a new blog. It is user-friendly yet it may take a while for the beginners to come through multiple features.

Blogger - An Overview.

Blogger is a free blogging service from Google. It was started in 1999 by Pyra Labs, and was later acquired by Google in 2003.

It's one of the few blogging platforms that enables users to create a blog without paying for anything at all. It mainly focuses on ease of use, by providing a free SSL certificate, hosting and even a Blogspot subdomain.

Your blog’s address will look something like this:

yourblogname.blogspot.com

However, you can also use a custom domain name with your blog. For that, you'll need to register a domain name through third-party domain registrars, then connect it to your Blogger blog.

Blogger vs. Wix: Comparison.

Let's take a look at bloggers and Wix in the following categories.

Templates and designs.

Customization.

Customer Support.

Pricing.

Apps integration.

Templates - Design.

Both Wix and Blogger offer premade templates to speed up the design process and give your website a good looking interface.

A Lot of people think you can't create a good looking site for bloggers but that's a very big misconception. In fact you can create stunning blogs that'll definitely retain readers.

The themes in blogger are kind of outdated when compared to that of wix thats for sure. But, there's a solution to that. Inorder to get SEO optimized and professional looking themes for blogger you'll have to download them for free from third-party sites like Themexpose, gooyaabitemplates, Colorlib, Hongkiat etc.

You can then play around with the themes and customize them to your liking by either changing the logo, color, layout, font etc.

Wix on the other hand provides 900+ template options for almost any type of site with five different categories of templates for Business & Services, Stores, Creatives, Community, and Blogs. This makes the design process a lot easier and faster.

On Wix free plan you won't get access to all the templates listed above as some are only for paying users.

So it's safe to say that in terms of customisation both wix and blogger are tied.

Customization.

Well in terms of customisation blogger is the winner. Since your theme's html code is easily accessible you can make changes while this can work as an advantage it can also be a major disadvantage because if you make mistakes without backing up you can corrupt the code and mess up your whole blog.

Another big misconception people have about blogger is that you can't customize it fully but that's not true you can have fully customized permalinks, clean URLs with customizable slugs, custom 404 page redirects, XML sitemap, and responsive images you can even integrate advanced SEO tools like AMP and Schema by copying and pasting the code into blog's theme.

You can also customize your sites’ meta tags, canonical tags, structured data, robots.txt file, etc. Some of these features can be enabled easily without editing html while some require the editing of the html code.

All you have to do is a quick Google search. You can find the html code for clean short URLs either online or on YouTube. Just copy it and paste it below your head tag and viola you'll have SEO optimized URLs but this is best used on new sites.

Wix on the other hand offers a handful of customisation option for bloggers. One of the biggest advantages wix has over bloggers is the fact that customizing your site is a lot easier. You don't have to copy and paste code in order to get pro features.

For customization purposes, Wix has multiple ways for editing to build a unique site. The first is its standard Wix editor which is a simple drag-and-drop Editor. You can choose from a wide array of elements and drag them on the canvas where you see fit with no structural limitations.

The elements are customizable through a bazillion of designing options. Furthermore, you can make use of an extensive font collection, custom color palettes, and sophisticated features like custom animations and innovative transparent videos.

Wix also has a powerful eCommerce engine and provides dedicated eCommerce plans coupled with plenty of advanced eCommerce tools Its impressive features allow you to sell unlimited digital and physical products, add multiple images, edit eCommerce templates, set shipping rules, manage inventory, and introduce special offers.

Moreover, you get 50+ payment gateways, a mobile app to manage the store, multiple sales channels, dropshipping features, analytics, and a wide range of other eCommerce features.

There are currently no eCommerce templates for bloggers as it's mostly used for Blogging.

Customer Support.

It’s crucial to have someone in place who can quickly help people out if they have questions or encountered problems when setting up their site.

Wix provides a dedicated and comprehensive help center as well as helpful videos that show you exactly how to use the builder to customize your site. Such videos include tutorials on how to: boost your site’s SEO, translate your site into any language, Add and customize strips, text, pages, links, and menus, Optimize images, Integrate social media channels etc.

Blogger on the other hand provides a Help Center containing user guides and articles to help you find solutions to the issues you face. They also have a Help forum where fellow users or product experts can help you out.

if you need to contact a real support agent that won't be possible as the blogger doesn't provide email, live chat, phone call, or any such support.

Pricing.

Blogger is totally free. You have access to all of Blogger's features for free, there is no signup fee, upgrade cost, or subscription cost.

However, those who want their blogs to look more professional can buy a custom domain anywhere online and point it to their Blogger page. Attribution Ads won't be displayed on your blog like that of wix and you also get unlimited bandwidth and 1GB of storage(15 GB if you have a Google drive account).

Wix also has a free plan for its users. But the free plan has limited functionality like it grants 500MB of storage and bandwidth, no access to Google analytics and an online processing system, and inability to set up an eCommerce store.

Wix pricing plans are divided into two major categories; Website plans and eCommerce plans. The former for creating blogs, professional, personal, business or portfolio sites. and the latter for creating an eCommerce store with a full eCommerce feature suite.

Website Plans’ pricing structure is as follow:

Apps/Addons Integration.

On Wix, integrating apps is very easy. By using the "App Marketplace" directly on your  dashboard, you can browse through Apps created by both Wix and third-party developers without ever leaving the editor.

Blogger on the other hand has free "Gadgets" where you can drag and drop different elements on each page. you can integrate:

JavaScript/html scripts

Adsense ads

Search bars

Images

RSS feeds

Etc.

Blogger also permits the purchase, download, and integration of Gadgets from third-party developers. Some of the gadgets which you can purchase are

Embed buttons

Countdown timers for product sales

Integrate chat to your website

Etc.

While Blogger has basic gadgets, Wix has hundreds of professional apps, designed both in-house and by third-party developers.

Some of the free apps permits:

Access social media tools

Addition of a blog to your website

Growth of communities around shared interests

Tickets sales and RSVPs for events

Etc.

While some paid apps allows you to:

Source products online for your ecommerce store

Integrate QuickBooks for orders made on your site

Accept online bookings

Etc.

Conclusion.

Blogger and Wix both provide free plans for beginners to create their website and explore their features. But there is a lot of difference between the two. While blogger is mainly for blogs, wix can be used for both blogs and eCommerce websites.

When compared on the free plan blogger is the definite winner because there are no restrictions. But if you include wix paid plans into this comparison then wix is the winner.

This is because of wix's reasonable pricing, customer support, customizability, theme and app library and eCommerce features.
